Lucy
Lucy serves as a Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Support (SEBS) clinician at BHN, working with middle and high school students. She began her journey at BHN as an intern while completing her Master of Clinical Psychology at American International College, later transitioning to part-time early intervention and therapy roles. Since joining BHN in 2005, Lucy has engaged in various outreach and clinical initiatives.
Having immigrated to the U.S. at age 10, Lucy faced a challenging transition, but she credits her supportive school network with helping her adapt. “I always wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, especially youth,” she reflects. “The support I received in school has greatly influenced my work today.”
In her current role, Lucy collaborates with two other SEBS teachers and four paraprofessionals, regularly checking in with students in various settings—whether in the office, hallway, cafeteria, or classrooms—to ensure they receive the support they need. She also facilitates Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings and communicates with students’ parents to understand any home dynamics that may affect their school experience.
Interacting with students is the highlight of Lucy's job. “At school, there’s never a dull moment,” she says. “You can have a plan, but you never know what will happen. Sometimes we’re just coloring or playing a game, and I remind them that this is work. They may be learning to wait their turn or to not be upset with losing. When they come to me to vent, that’s a success. Seeing even the smallest positive change in their behavior is rewarding.”
Lucy is committed to further outreach efforts. “There’s always room for improvement in any area of life, and it’s important to find ways to connect with the youth.”
When asked about the culture at BHN, Lucy emphasizes the respect among colleagues: "We come from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, but when it comes to our clients, we set aside our differences and focus on their needs."
