Our Work Is Rewarding
BHN provides programming to individuals and families in the areas of mental health, addiction and physical/intellectual disabilities. This can be challenging work, but, as our team members tell us, it is among the most rewarding work one can engage in.
At BHN, we are committed to attracting and retaining a workforce of dedicated, passionate, and well-qualified individuals. We employ over 2,500 individuals working in a compassionate and team-oriented environment that serves 38,000 individuals annually.
We have many long-serving employees at BHN who have made their careers here and risen through the ranks. As a result of our growth, BHN is considered a leader and a “go-to” resource in behavioral health in Western Massachusetts.
Started in 1938 as the Child Guidance Clinic in Springfield, BHN has continued to grow over the decades while maintaining a strong sense of community, both internally and with regard to the people we serve throughout the region. The sense of mission and community is in our DNA.

The level of support I received from Career Pathways was 10/10! The best part of this experience was taking everything I wanted to do in my professional life and getting support and resources from the career cultivator to do them. The coaching sessions helped me clarify my goals, encouraged me to pursue the things we discussed, and provided different ways to achieve my goals. I felt empowered.
- Tatiana, Program Director, Peer Support Services
My satisfaction level with this experience was a 10. Talking about goals and aspirations can be a scary thought, all I think about is how many barriers I will have to overcome to get there. But instead of my goals feeling like I was climbing Mt. Everest, Rachel made them feel like they were genuinely achievable. I would absolutely, 100%, recommend the career pathways program to all of my colleagues or friends!
- Katie, Certified Peer Specialist
BHN established the Katherine B. Wilson Staff Excellence Fund to support the career and development of our workforce and to assist in achieving Social Justice objectives. Through community partnerships, valuable in-kind services, and generous donations, BHN supports a variety of professional development opportunities for staff that include license preparation courses and fees, forgivable loans for tuition costs, community college courses and certificate programs, online and live trainings, and more!
“While at a crisis conference, I was able to learn more about what has worked with other programs and see how we could utilize that information to better our program. Every opportunity to learn inside and outside of your role is so important to help the community better.”
Ziana, Youth Mobile Crisis Intervention Team Lead
"I enjoy working at BHN, because my job allows me to help people get well. I'm able to help some of the most vulnerable people in society who are trying to reclaim their life. The forgivable loan that I received from the Staff Excellence Fund helped me focus on my education and not worry about the financial part of the program. This continuing education allows me to do my job more effectively. My goal is to continue working at BHN. I love the success stories and seeing clients complete their treatment"
Valrie, Counselor
“I attended Westfield State’s certificate program for substance use treatment with support from BHN. I gained confidence I never had, even while working in the field for over eight years. I plan to continue my career at BHN and continue my education to obtain my bachelor’s degree. This degree was far-fetched from my reality before I became an employee at BHN, and for this, I will be forever indebted and grateful.”
Drake, Counselor/Case Manager
